Robert Griffin III

Now before you go on a rant or a flame war that would make ESPN blush, I’m not talking about the football teams, exactly.  I’m talking about their respective influence on the upcoming Presidential election.  Follow me here…

In the United States, the Presidential election is decided by the Electoral College (EC).  There are 538 total EC votes and a candidate has to win a majority (270) to win the election.  If you remember the 2000 Presidential Election, the Supreme Court decision was to decide the EC votes for Florida, which would decide the election even though Al Gore won the popular vote nationwide.  Each state/district gets a certain number of EC votes, loosely based on the % of population that lives in that state or district.

The Washington Redskins represent Washington, D.C.  The New York Giants are one of two teams that are supposed to represent the State of New York.  For the purpose of this comparison we will go forward as if they were the only team to do so.

New York has 29 EC votes for a population just north of 19 million people.  Washington, D.C. has 3 EC votes for a population of roughly 600,000 people.  That means that there are approximately 670K people per EC vote in New York and 200K people per EC vote in Washington, D.C.

IF

Eli Manning lived in New York (which he doesn’t, he lives in New Jersey).

AND

Robert Griffin III lived in Washington D.C. (which he doesn’t, he lives in Virginia).

THEN

  • New York: 1 EC vote per 668K people
  • D.C.: 1 EC vote per 200K people

Advantage: Robert Griffin III (+233%)

In case you are wondering, if we go with where the QBs actually live and compare New Jersey and Virginia, it becomes much closer.

RG III vs. Eli Manning (Actual Home)

  • New Jersey: 1 EC vote per 628K people
  • Virginia: 1 EC vote per 615K people

Advantage: Robert Griffin III (+2%)

NFC East fans, in case you are wondering how Michael Vick and Tony Romo fit into this equation…

RG III vs. Michael Vick

  • Virginia: 1 EC vote per 615K people
  • Pennsylvania: 1 EC vote per 635K people

Advantage: Robert Griffin III (+3%)

RG III vs. Tono Romo

  • Virginia: 1 EC vote per 615K people
  • Texas: 1 EC vote per 661K people

Advantage: Robert Griffin III (+7.5%)
